Little House

Our programme for infants and toddlers is based on the RIE philosophy (Resources for Infant Educarers). We foster a respectful environment which supports the children to build trusting relationships with their teachers.

We provide opportunities for independent and social exploration and movement, encouraging infants and toddlers’ cognitive skills and language development.

Infants are cared for in the nursery where they can explore their environment freely without restriction, while the toddlers have several areas within the centre to support their emerging physical and social skills. Primary caregivers meet the emotional and physical needs of the children in their care (nursery or toddler area) and support their learning. This provides consistency of care and ensures infants and toddlers can build strong attachments with familiar adults.

Little House Philosophy

Partnerships – Ngā mahi ngā tahi

We believe in developing empowering and collaborative partnerships with parents, caregivers and whānau. We respect children’s diverse families and culture and promote New Zealand’s bicultural heritage, weaving Te Reo Māori and Tikanga throughout our daily curriculum. Teachers actively share with parents, caregivers and whānau, strengthening connections between the home and the centre.

Relationships – Ngā Hononga

We believe in developing warm, nurturing and responsive relationships between teachers and tamariki based on trust. We advocate positive attachment for infants and toddlers through primary care giving and familiar teachers.

Respect – Manaakitanga

Our practices are influenced by the RIE philosophy (Resources for Infant Educarers) where we respect infants and toddlers as unique individuals and allow them free movement to grow and learn at their own natural pace, within a supportive environment.

Learning Environment – Te wāhi ako

Infants and toddlers are seen as capable and competent explorers. They are able to discover and learn through a fun, secure, aesthetically pleasing environment. Care giving moments are seen as rich learning experiences for infants and toddlers.

Teachers are positive role models, responsive and attentive. Celebrating children’s learning, development and interests. Through professional development, teachers enhance the quality of their practice and continue their lifelong learning.
